Holsworthy Community College supported the Comic Relief Red Nose Day fundraising this year with a whole school non-uniform day on Friday 15th March.
Students also raised additional funds throughout the week and on the day
Year 8 students encouraged teachers to take part in the cupcake sweepstake – with the winner being announced on Friday at 3pm. Congratulations to Miss Goldsworthy, our winner.
Year 10 students baked and produced a magnificent spread of cakes and goodies, which they sold during break time and managed to raise a whopping £100!
The PE department ran a netball competition and a penalty shoot-out. Congratulations to the winners who won chocolates, which the students running the competition had donated. These competitions raised nearly £60!
We also had some lunchtime buskers who entertained the dinner queue and diners and raised nearly £40.
A massive thank you to students, staff and parents who helped us raise a fantastic £650!
We are always proud of our students, especially when they go the extra mile with their fundraising efforts. Well done, HCC!
On the 26th February, Year 9 netball team travelled to Shebbear for a match. In the first quarter, it was a slow start and Shebbear were leading 3-2. In the second quarter, we upped our game, and we managed a lead of 5-4. We carried on working to the best of our ability to secure a well-deserved win.
The overall score was 10-8 to Holsworthy.
Year 10 also played away against Shebbear. It was a great game and Holsworthy won 12-6. Player of the match was Alex.
Well done, girls!
On Tuesday 26th February Year 7/ 8 and Year 9 Holsworthy Rugby team took part in a rugby 7s tournament at West Buckland School.
In the first match, the under 13s (Yr 7/8) lost 0-5 to Bideford, however, we came back with confidence and managed to win our second game 3-2 to us, with Natan and Charlie scoring our tries, which led to our determined and hard-worked victory against Great Torrington School. In the third game, we played Shebbear College and lost 3-2. Finally, in our last game, we lost to Park 3-0. To sum up the tournament, we were well motivated and well lead by are honourable captains Lucas, Stephen and Caleb. In the team, we had our strong players Reuben, Charlie and Natan, as well as our fast players in Isaac, Lucas, Stephen, Sunny and our fastest and our captain Caleb.
The Year 9 team had three games in the group stage and they ended up losing all of them. The first one to Park 15-5, the second one to South Moulton 7-5 and the third one to West Buckland 15-0. We then ended up in the semi-final of the plate and were drawn against Braunton, which we lost 15-5. We were very unlucky to come out with four loses considering how well we played.
Holsworthy U16 netball team played at home to Kingsley on Thursday 24th January. With some of the team off ill, we had to draft in some Year 10 players at the last minute to make up the team.
Holsworthy got off to a good start, winning the first quarter 2-0, with both of our shooters, Anna and Hattie, scoring one a piece. In the second quarter, it was extremely close and end-to-end. Kingsley came back strong scoring one goal and at the end of this quarter, it was 2-1 to Holsworthy. In the third quarter, super sisters Issy and Hattie linked up well, playing the ball round the circle to get the ball to our shooters, Katie and Anna, and we were able to increase our lead to 3-1. In the final quarter, Holsworthy defended well and Kingsley were unable to get past our strong defence consisting of Lucy, Tallulah and Alex. The game ended 3-1 to Holsworthy and it was a great team effort by all involved.
Tallulah was selected as the player of the match by the other team. Well done, girls!
On Wednesday 16th January our Year 10 netball team played Shebbear Year 11s and sixth form students.
The game was goal to goal and very much constantly being turned over. After the first quarter we had a 1-0 lead, but got battered in the second quarter with them taking a 4-2 lead. We were working on our passages of play and timings in the third quarter, which ended up with us coming out with a 6-5 lead.
In the last quarter we were fighting really hard, but with 5 minutes to go, they were one goal up and one of our players got injured. We had to make a quick change and re-adjust our team. We were working so hard for the win and everyone was giving all their effort.
We managed to score two more goals before the final whistle for us to win the game 9-8.
It was a real team effort from everyone and Katie was named player of the match.
On Thursday 20th December, I was delighted to be able to go along to Waitrose, Holsworthy, to collect a cheque for £265, which was as a result of members of the public choosing to support us via their Community Matters scheme.
“We are delighted to be able to help with any school fitness project and it’s a pleasure to be able to present this cheque to Holsworthy Community College.” Marilyn, Waitrose Holsworthy Branch.
I would like to thank all the Waitrose shoppers that supported our fund-raising project to purchase a treadmill for the College fitness suite.
We will continue our fundraising efforts to ensure we provide our students with the best possible facilities.
